SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Tbe monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Horn • blow (chairman) Rangih'euea (lion, secretary), Cowley, Stevenson, Jno. Ross, F. Rimmer, Perreau, and the head master (Mr Banks). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Coley and Pearson.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows. From Mr H. F. Gabites acknowledging the committee’s congratulations on behalf of the Lytton Street school, winners of tile recent seven-a-side football tournament and stating that team much appreciated the friendly message.—Received. From tlte Education Board, acknowledging committee’s application for grant in aid of fencing and forwarding cheque for half cost of same. —Received.

From same, advising that the conversion of the old residence for cookery and woodwork classes was a good suggestion and stating that the lease of the premises used for woodwork would not expire until May next when steps would be taken to go further into the matter. Tn the meantime, the secretary would accompany the architect on a visit of inspection.—The Chairman said the committee would be notified of the visit and would confer with the secretary and architect on the subject.

The headmaster reported that the attendance for last month was 410.047 out of a roll number of 440; Miss Strand had resigned and Mrs Ross had been relieving ' and Miss Blandford had taken up her duties that morning; several repairs and requirements were set out. Resolved to bring under the notice of the architect the leaks in the spouting, repairs to desks, doors and locks, and to apply for seven thermometers for class-rooms. Resolved to await Mr Coley’s report re filling holes in the playing area.

The Chairman said Air Coley had ordered cinders from the railway authorities for the footpaths. Messrs Jno. Ross and Perreau were appointed visitors for the month. ,
