PERSIAN PROVERBS.
Persians have some very apt ami interesting- sayings and proverbs wicli have been handed down through the centuries. The Persian equivalent of our saying, “easting pearls to swine,” is “easting sweetmeats to the cows” and it is difficult to say which is the more elfective. There are several proverbs on the advantages of being gentle and kind in place of rough and harsh. Perhaps the best of these is the one which says: “By gentleness you may lead an elephant by a hair,” and there is another which declares “A pleasant voice will bring a snake out of its hole.” When a man tries to do the impossible, the Persians say that he is “trying to get oil out the sand.” As for our famous expression “Mind your own business,” it has two very effective Persian equivalents. The first says: “Every man to his own business,” and the second “If you are a cock, crow; if a hen lay eggs.”
