MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. FAILS.
Greymouth, June 22. In the Supreme Court to-day Charles Michael Doyle was tried on three charges—manslaughter, assault with intent to commit bodily harm, and assault causing bodily harm. He pleaded not guilty. The case arose from the death of William Henry Simpson, an able seaman on the steamer Kaituna, on May 11, at the hospital, following a surgical operation in connection with injuries to his shoulder received by him in a brawl on the steamer on tiie night of April 2. The evidence for the prosecution alleged that accused assaulted and threw deceased over liis shoulder, causing a dislocation of the shoulder, which lacerated blood vessels, causing internal haemorrhage; also that death was due to the shock of the operation and loss of blood. The jury after a three hours’ re- * tirement, acquitted accused on all counts.
