APATHY.
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT HITS OUT.
At last night’s annual meeting of the local Horticultural Society, when the election of officers was under consideration, the president, Rev. W. H. Walton, referred to the Apathy displayed by certain local people in matters which affected the welfare and incidentally the trade of the town. The president had been nominated for re-election. He said that while he had the welfare of the society at heart, he would like to see some fresh blood introduced. Last year he had been elected pre-. sident during his absence from'the town. He had accepted the position rather than be a party to see the society “fizzle out” for lack of interest. Since his residence in Foxton he had noticed that the “same old few” carried on the various organisations, while the majority which included business men, took no interest in deserving objects, except to criticise the work of others. He deprecated such apathy and lack of public spirit. Were it not for the services of a few the society would fizzle out. Yet there were others who did nothing, who should render assistance. Something should be done to arouse them from such lethargy in public matters. In conclusion he said he would like to see the Horticultural Society and Beautifying Society unite. Wiiile their funds could be kept separate, the objects of both societies were similar and it would be to the interest of both if there were closer cooperation. Members spoke appreciatingly of the president’s interest in ihe society and agreed with his remarks. The president was accorded a round of applause upon consenting to act for a further term.
