MOTOR FATALITY.
ONE WOMAN DROWNED
Auckland, June 18. On Saturday night, between Clevedon and Papnkura. a taxicab containing three ladies, went over a bank where the road takes a turn, and Mrs Edith Patton Chenery, a visitor from San Francisco, Avas drowned. The others were rescued from a perilous position with great difficulty, being dragged out of bitterly cold, dirty water in a nearly hopeless condition. But for the presence of seA’ornl motor ears in the vicinity, the Avliole of the occupants of the taxicab almost certainly Avonld have perished as the overturned ear Avas almost submerged in (lie stream and became a veritable death trap. Two lads, who Avere first to the rescue, got into the avo ter and vainly endeavoured to lift the overturned ear. There was no sign of life till a band emerged from the Avater. One man Avas speedily hauled out and Avith the arrival of more help, the doors of the taxi Avere burst open, and the other occupants Avere pulled out.
