SON WATCHES MOTHER BURN.
Dunedin, June 10. What the coroner described as a sordid tragedy was revealed at the inquest on Annie O’Leary, wlio died from burns. Thomas Watkins, a labourer, stated that Hie deceased lived with him. On Saturday last deceased went out for the purpose of meeting her son Patrick. The two came home with some beer and whisky. The son was then intoxicated. Early on Sunday morning the son, who slept in the sitting room, came to deceased’s room and got witness to extract a cork from a whisky bottle, deceased and her son then going into the sitting room. Later witness heard screams and found deceased lying in front of the lire with her clothes ablaze. The son was standing idle beside her-in an apparently stupid state. The son’s evidence was that he was awakened by his mother’s scream and put the flames out. In returning a verdict of death from shock, the coroner said the son’s whole showing was wretched, ho having been too drunk to assist.
