BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the following general business was transacted:— 1 It was decided that it be an in—* struction to the Borough foreman that when metalling streets, a sufficient crown be formedCr. McMurray’s notice of motion that the offer of the Horowhenua Hydro-Elecl rie Power Board of 60 lamps for the borough he accepted and that the previous decision to eut them down to 40 be rescinded, came up for consideration.

Cr. McMurray said that the Council should take all the lamps and power they could get as later there may be a shortage of power and lamps. Cr. Ross pointed out that there was not the slightest fear of either happening. If the Council took-the extra lamps and they were not in use, they would still have to pay for them. With the permission of the meeting Cr. McMurray withdrew the motion. It was decided to accept Mr A. E. Admore’s tender of £2 12/- for painting the gates at the entrance of Easton Park. It was also decided that a small wicket gate be erected, at the eastern entrance to Easton Park. Cr. Adams said that he had noticed that shop keepers were in the habit of sweeping the sweepings from their shops into the water channels. He wanted this abated at. once. Cr. Smith said that during his six years in Foxton he had not seen a shop-keeper do such a thing. They certainly swept the refuse from the footpaths into the channels. A letter was received from Mr Downes and Mr R. N. Speirs, requesting thiit. the Council erect a boundary fence on their property in Cook Street. —Decided to erect a five foot iron fence.

Decided that the recpiest of the combined churches to he allowed to connect up to the sewerage system without installing gully traps be not acceded to. PUMPING STATION REPORT. Number of hours pumping, 41; water pumped, 290,000 gallons, coal used, 16cwt. Oqrs. 41b.; oil, 7 pints; maintenance cost: oil 3/7, coal £2 3/-, wages £2O 12/7, miscellaneous 16/-, total £23 15/2. Work done outside pumping station consisted of laying three sewer connections, from main sewer to boundaries, of the following places: public school, tire station, and Court House. Also digging down to main sewer in Clyde St. to find sewer connection for new building on the corner. The main sewer north of Robinson St. has been blocked during the the cause being, in my opinion, the use of paper other than sanitary paper. I have also connected up four places with the water supply. It has been necessary to take off the drinking taps in Avenue Road and Easton Park as they are continually being broken no matter v. hat sort of tap is put on. The Inspector of machinery visited the Pump House during the month and said that a guard would have to be put on the big pump and this has been done. The report was adopted.
