COUNCILLORS TO ELECT MAYOR.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS WELLTNG TON REMIT.

At last night’s Council meeting Cr. Adams moved that the Council support the remit of the Wellington City Council to the Municipal Conference that the present method of electing Mayors be abolished and that the Mayor he elected by Councillors in Council assembled. Cr. Adams said that this was the English method and the host. New Zealand had tried to go one better. Cr. Coley: Yes, and it has! Cr. Adams said that this was not so. He considered that the Councillors were hotter able to select their chairman than the general public. Ho instanced a ease where an outsider had defeated the previous Mayor “by the spin of a coin.’’ This was not in the best interests of a borough. The Mayor should be a man of experience in Council ad - ministration. The Mayor said that the present system was more democratic. The motion was carried.
