MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
MOTORIST ACQUITTED,
Wellington, Last Night,
In the Cupreme Court, Thomas Francis Bailey was charged with manslaughter as a consequence of the death of a lad named Herbert Reginald Johnstone, arising out of an accident at Karori. It was contended by the Crown that accused had driven in a negligent manner, and in order to avoid a tramcar it was alleged he swerved too much, striking and killing the lad, who was on the side of the road. It was stated that the corner was known to be a particularly dangerous one, and though no bylaw dealt with speed around this particular corner, the Crown maintained it w r as set down by the general city by-law at six miles an hour. For the defence, it was stated that accused was not speeding or acting in an unreasonable manner. He had suddenly swerved to avoid a tram, and did all possible to avoid a collision.
The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
