BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

Since the local Beautifying Society came into existence it has accomplished a good deal of useful work and has assisted ipaterially to make our little town more attractive. The transformation of the old cemetery from an eyesore to a beauty spot is only part of its operations and the commencement of a scheme which, in the future, if its operations are not hindered, will make Foxton a place of beauty. Those actually associated with the society are anxious to carry on and are deserving of all praise for the enthusiasm shown and the work accomplished. Foxton is indebted to our esteemed townsman, Mr A. S. Easton, for the gift of several acres of land, centrally situated, to be used as a public playground and garden. The gift was a thanks offering and a memorial for the successful issue of the great war. In order to give effect to the donor’s wishes, the society secured the services of Mr Black, of Palmerston North, to prepare a plan for the lay-out of the park, which is vested in the Borough Council. Unfortunately Mr Black’s scheme has been practically abandoned, as it was found impossible of accomplishment while i lie greater portion of the area is used as a football lield to the exclusion of tennis, croquet, swings, etc. for the children. Tree planting in various streets lias also been undertaken. Further planting is to be carried out this year on the Avenue Road, Lady’s Mile and Russell Street, besids a proposal to beautify a waste piece of land at the north entrance of the town and work in Victoria Park and planting the river bank.

The funds in hand to carry on this work total about £3OO which will provide sufficient to carry on for the next year.

Tlie annual meeting of the society will he held on Thursday evening next in the Town Hail supper- room.
