ILLEGALLY ON LICENSED PREMISES.
At the local S.M. Court yesterday before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., George Daniells, Osborn, John Ross and 1 Peter Robinson were charged by the police with being illegally on the licensed premises of the Post Office Hotel on the morning of Good Friday. Daniells was the only one charged who put in an appearance and pleaded guilty. Constable Owen, in evidence, said that he saw Robinson and Osborn come out of the hotel. The former had invited the latter to have a drink. Robinson’s excuse was that he had gone into the hotel in reference to a fare. On visiting the hotel he saw Ross and Daniells there and they gave no excuse for being on the premises. Fines of £2 and costs 7/- were inflicted in each case. Norman ITall and eGorge Gupwell were charged with being on the licensed premises of the Family Ho-tc-1 on the same date. Gupwell did not appear and Hall pleaded not guilty. Constable Owen said he saw the two men enter the Family Hotel on the date in question. On making a search of the premises he found Gupwell hiding behind a cupboard. Saw Hall subsequently come out of the hotel but did not see him when he searched. He was apparently hiding upstairs. R. Palmer, licensee, said he spoke to Hall through the window but Hall did not ask for a drink and he did not see him on the premises. When he spoke to Hall, the latter was going towards the rear of the premises. Hall denied he entered the hotel but went to the rear of the premises. A fine of £2 was inflicted and costs. Hall was given seven days in which to pay, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
