Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 17, 1923. FOXTON BEA U T TIFYING SOCIETY.

WHEN the Eoxton Boautifyi.no- Society was bronchi into bein'; by Airs (•'. Robiiison, in May. 1920, it was mentioned at the inaugural meeting that the aims and objects of the society were the beautifying, by the planting of suitable trees and slmibs, of our reserves and waste places in order to make the town attractive. The transformation of the “old cemetery'’ from an eyesore to a beauty spot has in itself justided the society's existence, but the society has accomplished other good work in the matter of planting deciduous trees in some of our streets, which, in the years to come will provide shady avenues. The soviet v was also responsible tor obtainin'; a lay-out for Easton Park to include “children’s playground, gardens, eroipud and tennis courts. The scheme, however, was abandoned except for the levelling of the ground and sowing it in grass and the planting of shrubs and hedges. It is regret table that the original idea was not carried out, lull Ibis was found impossible of accomplishment while the greater portion of the Park is used for football. Included in the original scheme was a pavilion upon which the society proposed lo expend the sum of £259. The abandonment of Air Black’s scheme and the adoption of rules, precluded lliej society's funds being expended on a pavilion. The Borough Council now ask that Ihe societv make a grant of £250 from its funds for this purpose. We do not believe that the society would be justified in acceding- to the request as its funds can be used to better advantage in developing the activities for which ii came into existence. Further, Easton Park is vested in the Borough Council and if public conveniences are required it is the duty of the Council to provide them. An attempt was made to alter the rules to allow the soeiev to expend money on buildings but was defeated and it was stated that any further attempt to break away from this rule would bring about the dismemberment of- the society.
