Tlie death oceured at Dunedin yesterday of the Rev. Alexander Doull, late of Palmerston North.
The combined church service will be held in the Methodist; Church at 7.30 o’clock this evening. Mt. Etna is emipting on a greatly increased scale, and a new crater is hurling lava 1,000 Keel up. At last night’s Council meeting accounts amounting to £2,807 17s 5d were passed for payment. The new member for Tauranga, Mr MacMillan, is Hie heaviest man in the House. He tips the scale at just on 22 stone. In'the Wellington Supreme Court on Saturday, Frederick Marryatt, for theft while, manager of the Worn roa State Farm, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. At last night’s Borough Council meeting the Mayor and Crs. Bryant and A. N. Smith were re-appointed the borough represonhilives on the Foxton Fire Board.
,The pound keeper reported to Monday night’s Council meeting as follows:- —“During the month of April, l(i head of slock had been impounded by the ranger and driving fees to the amount of 7/- and L/trespass fee have been collected.”

I just called to ask what is wrong with a fur coat you have in the window, was the rather unusual enquiry by a lady who visited a drapery establishment in Foxton. When informed that there was nothing wrong with it she would hardly believe it, having priced fur coats in several of the leading towns in the North Island. Those present at last n ighl's Borough Council meeting were: — The Mayor and Crs. Coley, Walker, Parkin, Adams, McMurray, Thorpe, Boss and Smith. Mr Huntley, borough road foreman, was also in attendance.
A line haul of plaice was netted at the Heads last week by local fishermen. These fish art 1 like I lie flounder in shape, but very much larger. Their appearance in the river is somewhat of a mystery, none having previously been caught locally. The river at the time was in Hood and the sea water for some distance, out was discoloured.
At an early hour on Sunday morning a four-roomed cottage and contents adjoining the Bainesse factory, were totally destroyed by lire. The cottage was occupied by Mr Terry and family. When discovered by the inmates the lire had a good hold of the building and Mr Terrv experienced some difficulty in rescuing one of his children.
Ladies entering for The C. M. Boss Co.’s knitting competition are reminded that all entries must be in by Saturday, 19th. All entries sent into the linn’s Fox toil branch will be forwarded to Palmerston North and must be accompanied by the knitter’s name and purchase docket Any garment made from wool or silk of any brand purchased from the firm can he entered in this competition.*
Last evening the members of the Manawatn U.A.O.D. Lodge made a presentation to Bro. D. Ball on the eve of his marriage. On behalf of the Lodge and members, Bro. G. H. Hinds, A.D., said that it afforded him much pleasure to perform the pleasant duty of handing to Bro. Ball a token of the high esteem in which he is held by the members ami to assure him that the brethren wished him health, wealth, and prosperity. He entertained the hope I bat. when fhe anticipated event was

In conclusion lie wished the bride-to-be all sorts of luck and happiness. In rising to acknowledge the gift Bro. D. Ball was heartily applauded. He thanked the lodge m ,.st cordially for . its thoughtful gift which, lie observed, came as a surprise and said llial he appreciated the spirit which prompted the gifl and the good wishes which had been tendered to him and his future bride. The presentation consisted of n set of afternoon tea spoons, sugar tongs and butter knives.
