BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
A committee meeting of the above was held on Monday last. There were present:—Mesdames P. Easton, McMurray, Moore, Miss Spedrs, and Messrs Perreau (in the chair), Admore, Symons, Christie, Chrystall, and Rca*. Walton. Re the Society’s application to the Council to put a gate at the back of Easton Park giving access tc .Johnston Street. —The reply received Avas that the matter Avould lie left for the new council to deal with.
Tree-planting for the coming season was discussed. It Avas decided to proceed Avith further planting in Union Street, and to replace plane trees that had died. Also nmerocarpas to he planted along the drain side of Easton Park and nke akc shrubs for Ihaknva Gardens. Owing Io part of the shrubbery at the opposite end from the Park gates being destroyed by being trampled over by thoughtless people coming out from football matches, it Avas decided to erect a rail -fence for protection.
The cannon on the hill in Ihakara Gardens is to he fixed in a stationary position as it has been moved about. •It Avas decided to draw the Council’s attention to several overhanging hedges along some of the principal footpaths in the borough—especially boxthorn which is dangerous to pedestrians. The annual meeting is to he held this month and it is lo be hoped that many citizens Avill attend and take an interest in the work of the Society Avliieh is a benefit to. the eomnmnitA7 as a Avhole.
