FLOOD IN THE MANAWATU.

RIVER RISING

Word was received last night by the local postmaster that the Manawatu was 3ft. 6 inches above normal in the Gorge and a further rise of six inches was reached this morning.

The heavy rains of last night have caused the Oroua to flood, which has increased the flood waters in the Manawatu which is spilling over at Moutoa, hut up to the present has not interfered with (ra flic. Settlers at Moutoa are awaiting the effects of the flood as a result 1 of the banking scheme.

High floods are reported from the North Canterbury district. There is a record flood in the Wairau and bridges have been washed away. There were two to three feet of water all over the business area of Blenheim. Culverden has been completely isolated with the flood waters. Heavy losses of stock are reported. At Christchurch there was a record rainfall. .Telegraph communication has been interrupted.
