BOROUGH COUNCIL.

INSTALLATION CEREMONY.

The statutory meeting of the Borough Council was held yesterday at 11 a.m. for the purpose of “swearing in” the new Council. The Mayor presided and there were present :—Crs Alex Ross, McMurray, Adams, Thorpe, Walker, Parkin, and A. N. Smith. Apologies were received from Crs. Coley and Bryant.

The usual declarations were signed.

Cr. McMurray pointed out that the hour for the ceremony was a very inconvenient one to business men and it would have been better had the Mayor convened the meeting in the evening. The Mayor replied that in convening the meeting he had complied with the Act.

The Mayor congratulated the Councillors upon their election and made special reference to Cr. Ross who had topped the poll, which, he said, indicated the public, appreciation of his services. He said the new Council was the best that had yet been elected locally and he hoped they would work harmoniously together. He said the Committees would be set up at the next meeting. Cr. McMurray suggested that the personnel of the Finance and Works Committees should remain as at present as these Councillors had the work at their finger ends. The Councillors present congratulated the Mayor upon his election and reciprocated the good wishes expressed by him. Cr. McMurray asked permission to present the Council with an enlarged copy of “the Mayor’s progressive policy,” to be hung on the Council wall so that they would have the same before them to inspire them “with a spirit of progress.” ■ The Mayor said he would accept the offer and gave permission for the same to be exhibited as suggested. remarking that he considered it a >pi end id idea.
