EGGS AS LARGE AS BARRELS.
Explorers and travellers occasionally iind eggs of an enormous size. Several specimens, for instance, are in existence of the eggs of the epinornis, a gigantic extinct leathered monster which formerly inhabited Madagascar. The epinornis laid an egg as big as a small beer barrel, its contents being equal to those of about two hundred hens’ eggs. How these relics of past times lirst came to be discovered makes interesting reading. A Trench trader in the interior of Madagascar was struck by the unusual appearance of certain vessels used .by the natives for storing 1 water. Closer investigation showed that these odd-looking utensils were in reality gigantic eggs cut in halves. The natives, on being questioned, said that they knew nothing of the bud, but that the eggs were found buried in a certain sand-pit some distance oft. An oiler to purchase all that could be procured resulted in the discovery of six perfect specimens. These were removed to Trance, and are now in the museum of the Academy of Sciences at Paris.
