Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 1923. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The local Police want, an owner for a gold brooch found recently.

The Government Life Insurance Department advertise that they intend to issue a copy to take the place of tiie lost policy on the life of Mr James Bo we of Karamu.

It is anticipated that there will be a crowded meeting at the Royal Theatre to-night to listen to some of the Municipal candidates express their views on civic matters.

At last night's meeting the Mayor said that public men should be encouraged and not adversely criticised. The Press should “lead them gently by the hand.” (laughter).

“This is my last two years in office if I am elected,” said the Mayor at last night's meeting and after that I am going to live in retirement and Mi 1 Hoi lings or any one else can have the job!”

“Imagine Mr Holliugs and his friends standing under the water tower during an earthquake. Mr Holliugs would say, “don’t run away, if it falLs it won't hurt you—it’s only a toy!” A joke by the Mayor which was received in stony silence at last night’s meeting.

Mrs G. Coley left Foxton yesterday for Auckland on a holiday visit. The Rev. Father Forrestnl, of Inglewood, late local parish priest, is on a visit to Foxton.

“Irrigating the Moiitoa was like greasing the fat pig” said Mr Chrystall amid laughter at last night’s meeting.

Two artistically decorated wedding cakes, splendid samples of the pastry cooks’ art, have keen attracting much interest in Mr J. Walls’ shop window. They are to adorn the festive hoards of' a local and Moutoa weddings this week:

Tenders are invited 'bv the Secretary of the Foxton Bowling Club for the purchase (either together or separately) of one sft. Booth McDonald windmill and pump and two 800 gallon galvanised iron tanks, all in first-class order. Tenders close on Saturday of this week. Mr P. Hollings is confined to his bed with an indisposition. Hh hopes to be able to be about by election day. Elsewhere in this issue he .publishes an inset in reference to his candidature. Much sympathy is expressed on his behalf. A telephone message from him this morning was “Tell the people that I am going on with the fight!” Referring to the heavy floods now being experienced at Dunedin, telegraphic advice from that city to-day says that the floods are subsiding. One wing of the Dental School has been undermined while another has been carried away. Work, however, will resume on Thursday. Rain is still falling lightly and the roads in the city are like water races. Many people are homeless and rescue work is being carried on in boats.

A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last-night. Those present were: Tlis Worship the Mayor (Mr .J. Chrystall) and Crs. Bryant, Smith, Rand. .Martin, Thompson, ’and Coley. Routine matters were dealt with and a request by Mr Christie, on helmlf of the Bowling Club for permission for that body to remove 25 yards of soil from Spring Street was referred to the Public Works Committee. Or. Thompson.strongly opposed fhe request.

On Saturday afternoon Sir James Wilson, chairman of the Manawatn County Council, accompanied by the County Engineer ( Mr Tliekford) conferred with,. Cr. Barber, of the Awahon Riding, in respect to the construction of stop-hank at the Shannon bridge and the proposed deviation of the Whirokino Road to higher ground. In conversation with the chairman our representative was informed that both these works are of an extraordinary nature and were causing a great deal of anxiety as well as expense to the County Council. In llu* ease of the Manawatn Gorge, Paekakariki and Rimutaka Hills, the Government had given financial assistance to such works. The Manawatn River presented a similar difficulty and although application had been made to the Government for assistance, tlie request, hml not been granted. The Foxton Borough Council and Horowhenua County Council were not favourable to hear any part of the burden although such works were of as much importance to Hie welfare of these councils as to the Manawatn. Cr. AV. E. Barber had obtained an estimate tor the road -deviation at Whirokino which" would cost about £3,000. To maintain the present road was a very costly business as it was constructed on a “floating surface.” The Horowhenua County Council were responsible for the approach to the Shannon bridge but it was difficult at present to define where the actual approach to the bridge began. This point would have an important bearing on the slop-hank now under construction. From what our representative could gather it is possible that failing financial assistance from the Government, a Royal Commission will be set up to equitably distribute the cost and maintenance of these works.
