THE PRICE OF GAS.
A misconception appeared in our last issue in connection with the increase in the price of gas. The report submitted to the Council read: “The sum of £502 12s 3d showing in this year’s balancesheet as expended on retorts will not oeeurr again for a few years, and with this saving in view, I have reduced the amount of gas works rate from Id to Id this being estimated to produce C2OG 55.” When the estimates were before the Council for confirmation an amendment moved hv Cr. Coley seconded by Cr. Thompson that the price of gas be increased to cover the cost of manufacture and that the Gas Rate be not levied on being put to the meeting, was lost, the mover and the seconder with Cr. Walker alone voting for it. Councillor Coley’s suggestion was to increase the price of gas by lOd per 1,000 feet. The motion as above set out on being put to Ihe meeting was carried. A subsequent motion increasing the price of gas to consumers outside the borough by 10d per IffibO ft. was earri ed un anim ousiy.
The position now is that the price of gas, except to consumers outside the borough, remains as at present and the gas rate has been reduced hv half.
