BOWLING.
MAN SON AND BARR CUP,
A local rink consisting of Ball, Ross, Christie and Admore (s) met Jones’ rink on the Palmerston N. Club’s green on Saturday in an endeavour to wrest the Munson and Barr Cup from that rink, who have defended the trophy on numerous occasions since winning it some little time ago. The result of the match was that Jones retained the trophy by the small margin of three points after a very evenly contested and very good game. Palmerston rink led off one on the first head, but Foxton subsequently drew ahead, until at the afternoon tea adjournment the score stood 11 —8 in favour of Foxton. On resuming play Jones notched three, which made the scores even, eleven all. From then on until the nineteenth head the scores were evened by either rink as alternate heads were played, the figures being fifteen ‘ all. On the twentieth head Foxton was lying five when the skips went up to play, but Jones succeeded in turning the tables and adding another single to his score, which gave him a lead of one point, with one head to go. On the final head things were awkwardly placed for Admore, and lie was not successful in his attempts to get the necessary score for a win, the points, in fact, going to the home team, making the final scores 18—15. The game was a hard-fought one throughout, and was admitted to be the closest call Jones has had since holding the Cup. All the Foxton men played good bowls, more especially Ball as lead.
Payers are reminded of the Pairs Tournament to be held on the local green to-morrow. Play will commence at 1.30 sharp, and those intending to take part should post their names on the board at the Club’s pavilion not later than (his evening.
