TWO CONFLAGRATIONS.
SIX-ROOMED DWELLING IN avenue road.
ALL SAINTS’ CHILDREN’S HOME AT SEASIDE,
At about 3.30 yesterday morning a six-roomed residence in Avenue Road, owned and occupied by Mr p. Setter, together with the contents was totally destroyed by lire. Mr Setter was aroused when the tire had a good hold of the building. There was no time to save anything. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. The insurances are £2OO on the furniture in the Commercial Union and £450 on the building in the Standard. No alarm was given as the fire was not noticed by towns- , people owing to its location being on the outskirts of the town. At about 8.30 last evening a glare was noticed in the direction of the local seaside and shortly afterwards word was received to the effect that All Saints’ Children’s Home was ablaze. The syren was sounded biit as the fire was outside the lire area the brigade were not called upon for assistance. The hopse had not been ocpupied sinpe Eastpr, when it was used by the Palmerston North Young-Women’s Bible Class Camp.'The building was erected and furnished about two years ago by public subscription for the use of the children connected with the home at Palmerston North. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. It is reported that .a light was noticed in one of the rooms earlier in the evening but no authority was given for its occupation. The building provided accommodation for about 40 children and the staff and was-insured for £4OO. The loss will be a severe one to the autliori'■ties. The police are investigating the matter.
