The soccer football season was opened locally yesterday by the presence of a team representing Wellington South Club, which niel a local eleven in a friendly eon lest- on MY AiVMurray’s grounds, Russel! Si. Ti e resultant scores were 7—l in favour of the visitors, but the scores are. by no means accurate indications of the nature of tin* match, as the local team put up a good performance, and their opponents admitted that the margin of their win was not in accordance with the actual circumstances of play. Last evening a supper was tendered to the visiting team in the Town Hall supper-room, when about fifty persons were present. '['h e visitors returned to their homes this morning. A full report of the match and the social evening will appear next issue.
