SHIP AFIRE.
WIRELESS MESSAGE FROM THE .. NORTH. Wellington,' Last Night. The secretary for Marine reports that he has received advice from the Secretary of the General Post Office to the effect that the Awanui wireless station had reported signs of a vessel being on fire southwest of Ahipara, in the vicinity of the Ninety Miles Beach, towards Cape Maria Van Diemen. They clearly saw dense volumes of smoke. On receipt of that advice telegraphic instructions were sent to Whangape to despatch a tug immediately. Last, night, a telegram was received saying the vessel was a considerable distance north * of Ahipara, not south-west, as previously reported. She appeared to be inshore, and a party had gone out by motor from Te Paki to investigate, and should return shortly. Any later report would be forwarded for publication. A-, later message states that the party; from Tepaka have returned from the beach, but have seen nothing .of the reported burning vessel. -
