CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I have read with interest the views expressed by your correspondent in regard to the Council's action in going on with the rebuilding of the Borough Council Chambers.

I regret being unable to agree with Mr Ilollngs on this matter, as to my mind it is far better for the Council to push on with the rebuilding of the Chambers before the winter sets in rather than delay the matter by placing a loan proposal before the ratepayers, with a likelihood of its being defeated. We have the money in hand to build a very suitable building for the Council Chambers and it will lie quite early enough if the new Council puts forward a loan proposal for the erection of a Public Library and Reading Room, also public swimming baths, which are all greatly to lie desired, and which should form part of e\'ery progressive Borough’s attractions. As most of your readers are well aware, the proposal to use the spare room at the Town Hall as a Reading room Avas only a temporary measure, as the Council, I feel sure, fully realise that the room referred to would never be suitable for permanent use. These, Sir, are my views on this matter and I feel sure are the views held by many of our leading citizens. —Yours etc., A. N. SMITH.
