ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

The members of the Association Football Club are both enterprising and enthusiastic and they opened the ball yesterday evening with a smoke concert in Mrs Walls’ dininjg rooms, which were nicely decorated with the colours of the club and the tables groaned under the good things supplied for the satisfying of the inner nian. Mr A. N. Smith, the genial president, occupied the chair, and conducted proceedings with a swing and go that made much towards the success and enjoyment of the evening. In opening the proceedings, be said he was sorry that their function' had clashed with the annual meeting of the Rugby Football Club, but when making arrangements they had no idea the Rugby football club’s meeting was to be held that night. He was pleased to see so many pi’esent and gave Ihem a hearty welcome, and trusted lliey would have a real good time. The Association Football Club had only commenced operations at the latter part of last season, but owing lo the enthusiasm of its members, they now had twenty-five playing members and thirty honorary members. Games bad been arranged with Levin and Wellington, who were sending teams to Foxton on Faster Saturday and Easter Monday respectively. He was sure the club had a very successful season before it.

The toast of the king was then honoured and the National Anthem sung. The first item was a song by Mr B. Hynes, “When the Great Red Dawn is Shining,” encored. Mr Bremner, a visitor to Foxton, delighted the company with a comie recitation (“Murphy Shall Not Sing To-night,”) to which he had to give an encore. Mr Bvne toasted “Kindred Sports,” and said he was pleased to see kindred sports so well represented —all sports should pull together, there should be no jealousy but good honest rivalry. Mr McMurray briefly responded and wished the club a successful year. Mr Hynes took charge of a community sing in which all joined very heartily. “Mine Host” was the next toast in the capable hands of Mr Jack. -Mr Osborne replied on behalf of Mr and Mrs Walls. A duet by Messrs Carter and Hynes was encored as also was a banjo solo by Mr Cobbe. The most important. toast, “The Ladies,” was entrusted to Mr Pearson. Mr Cowley ably replied. Then followed a song by Mr Osborne, a recitation by Mr Bremner (encored), a song by Mr Chalk (encored), and a sextet by Messrs Hynes, Carter, Osborne, Rotter, Cowley and Chaffey (encored). The toast “Foxton Association Football Club” was proposed by Mr Fergie and responded to by (he president and Messrs Hynes and Jenvey. The following items then followed: banjo solo, Mr R. Cobbe (encored); instrumental trio, Messrs Walls (2) (piano and cornet), and C. Simmons (violin), encored; song, Mr Byne; quintet, Messrs Carter, Retter, Chaffey, Hynes and Hiyini, encored'; song (comic), Mr Bremner, encored; duet, (instrumental), Messrs Walls Bros, and as an encore community singing was indulged in. The toasts: “The Stewards,” and the “President” concluded a very enjoyable and successful evening.
