LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At last night’s Council meeting accounts amounting to £2,187 13s 8d were passed for payment. During the month of February, six head of stock was impounded by the ranger and driving fees to the amount of (>/- collected. It is announced that Carpentier and Siki will meet between July 14 and September 10, for the gloryonly, Carpentier agreeing to hand over his share to French scientific laboratories.
A party of several hundred, comprising children from the Queen’s Park School (Wanganui), with their parents and teachers, spent their annual picnic at Palmerston North last Friday. The visitors were taken to various places of interest and a most enjoyable time was spent. Those present at last night’s Council meeting were: Ilis Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall Esq.), and Crs. Coley, Thompson, Martin, Smith, Rand, Bryant, and Walker. ]\fr R. Climie was also in attendance. At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor said that the local Plunket Society was doing good work in Foxton and he was pleased that the Finance Committee had recommended a donation of £2 to its funds. He was sorry that the amount could not be more.
A fire at Park Island, Napier, on Sunday, destroyed the residence of I lie master of the Old People’s Home. For a time anxiety was felt for the safety of the 110 inmates. The quarters of the latter, however, which are of brick, were only slightly touched. The work of removing - the old men was soon discontinued.
Croquet players in Otaki appear to he breaking records as regards the time taken to play matches. A game (doubles) was started at 2 p.m., ami finished in the moonlight at 7.30 p.m. Mesdames Noble and Xieolson and Mesdames Davies and Bills were the contestants, and after an exciting finish the former
pair won. The Salvation Army shop day, held' in Mr Oliver’s shop on Saturday, proved a. great success. The officers, Eiisgn and Mrs Huston, and deeply grateful to all who in any way helped to Make the effort a success. The local corps will derive benefit from the effort to assist in putting in the drainage in the house and hall. During the evening the unsold goods were auctioned by Mr Ries.
