The asphalt courts gave Foxton an advantage and enabled them to Avin by 14 sets (106 games) to 5 sets (72 games). One game was drawn as the light became too bad to continue to a finish. It. .was very pleasing to have the veteran player, Mr Ferguson (avlio Avon the championship of Christchurch in 1896) taking part in this-match, and judging by the fight lie put up against the local champion, he still has many years of active tennis left in the “old horse” notwithstanding tliat lit* lias passed his (ifty-seA r enlh birthday. The Misses Williams, Perreau and Owen had charge of the afternoon tea, and the assiduous manner in which they looked after the wants of the visitors and players greatly contributed to the success and enjoyment of the afternoon.
The folloAving matches are proposed in the near future if convenient arrangements can lie made: — Foxton v. Manawatu, at Palmerston on 31st ins;!., Foxton v. Bulls (Newman Cup) at Bulls on Easter Monday and Country Cup matches with Levin, Otaki, and Shannon. The improved playing of the younger members calls for favourable comment.
Members are requested to take early opportunity to play off the Rose BoaaT (Ladies) and Men’s Handicap competitions.
