DR. FRENCH OLIVER.
There was a large attendance at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday night to hear an address by Dr. French Oliver, who is conducting an evangelistic mission in the large centres of the Dominion., He was accompanied by Mr Cedarholm who conducted the singing and. contributed a solo. The gathering was representative "of the various churches. The Rev. F. McDonald welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Presbyterian Church and the Mayor ,„( Mr John Chrystall) accorded the visitors a civic welcome to the town- and spoke * appreciatively of the work Dr. French was engaged in.
After the singing of several well-known hymns, the reading of scripture, - and prayer, by Mr Moir, Dr. Oliver delivered a stirring and eloquent address on the Bible as the inspired word of God. He combated the views of the so-called higher critics and unsparingly criticised those who desired to mutilate the word of God. The Bible succeeded in uplifting the nations where other comparative religions had' failed. It brought hope and consolation to millions and its transforming power was daily evidenced.
The doctor made a strong appeal at the conclusion of his lecture.
