RAILWAY CLERK’S LAPSE.

Napier, Last Night. In the Supreme Court before Sir John Salmond, David Hodges, railway clerk, of Hastings, was found guilty of theft of £222 5/6 received by him on behalf of the Railway Department. Accused endeavoured to explain that the money was merely used to balance accounts and was rendered necessary by the system lie adopted of giving short credit to carriers to faciliatate immediate delivery of goods. The credit system was contrary to the regulations. The jury recommended accused to mercy on the grounds of the laxity prevailing in the department.. He was remanded for sentence.
