BAND CONTEST SENSATION.

WATER SIDE RS’ IN ST RUMENTS SEIZED BY BAILIFF. Dunedin, Yesterday. An unfortunate incident occurred ;it the conclusion of the quickstep competition at the band contest on Saturday afternoon, when the bailill' waited on the conductor of the Wellington Watersiders’ Band and s.-iid he had authority and power to take the hand’s instruments. As a result, the hand was unable to compete in the “own choice” selection in the evening. Although the Redfern, Invercargill Hibernian and Ashburton Bands generously offered the use of their instruments, the offer was not accepted. As far as can lie gathered,-the reason for tin* action taken arose out of the recent action in Wellington when two or three members of llie Watersiders’ Union proceeded against the Union for preventing them working on the wharf and the claimants were awarded damages. The Mayor of Dunedin, at the function in the evening, said it was most regrettable that such an incident should have occurred, and he considered that the bailiff should at least have waited until the programme was concluded before taking action. The action reflected on the bandsmen and the people of Dunedin as a whole, that the public should be debarred from hearing the Wellington Watersiders play.
