FATAL IGNORANCE.
IMPROPER FOOD FOR INFANT
DEATH BY MALNUTRITION. Hamilton, February 23. At an inquest concerning the death of a three-months-old child, medical evidence was given that the food administered to the child as described by the mother’s evidence was quite improper for an infant of that age. Had the child been attended to in time its life might have been saved.
In her evidence, the mother said that she had not thought there was need to call in a doctor or take the baby to a nurse, but would have gone to the latter had she known such treatment was free. Her husband was a labourer, and they could not afford any expense not absolutely necessary. The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to malnutrition due to incorrect feeding, attributabe to ignorance on the part of the parents.
