i / "■ TROUBLE IN STRATFORD. COUNCILLOR REMOVED BY POLICE. The troubles of the electric light department of the Stratford Borough Council which have disturbed the atmosphere of the council for some months past, culminated in drastic action at last Thursday night’s m'eeting. The report of the general purposes committee came " up for confirmation or otherwise, and Cr. R. H. Cameron moved the deletion of certain resolutions. The Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan) said, in the course of discussion, that lie regretted to hear the remarks of people outside Stratford with regard to the way the council conducted its business. The resolution carried by the general purposes meeting was in the nature of an absurdity. If the council persist ted in its present attitude he going to call a meeting of the ratepayers to discuss the position.
Cr. T. Lawson: Call a meeting and see the result for yourself. A long discussion, more or less persona! followed, the Mayor remarking that he hoped the council would leave sentiment entirely out of its business in future. Cr. S. Wjard said he was glad to hear the Mayor say sentiment should be left out of electric light matters. If the Mayor had not been a personal friend of , that man’s son would not be in his present position on the staff. The Mayor took strong exception to this remark and asked Cr. Ward to withdraw it. Cr. Ward refused absolutely to withdraw it. The Mayor then ordered Cr. Ward to leave the room but he refused. The Mayor- then adjourned the council for fifteen minutes, and he left the room. He returned a few moments later to tell Cr. Ward that if he did not leave the police would be called to remove him. The Mayor went to his room and the telephone was heard to ring. Presently the Mayor came back to the council table and the council sat in silence. After about a quarter of an hour Constable Bleasel appeared in the room and asked Cr. Ward what he had to sav.
Councillors asked the Mayor to have the position explained to the constable. The Mayor ordered the constable to remove Cr. Ward, and said he would take full responsibility for the action. Cr. Ward then left the room with the constable, and was followed by Crs. C. Jackson and T. Lawson. The council then resumed the business before it.. —Daily News.
