• ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr Overton, engineer to the Board, reported:— Buildings.—'The successful tenderer for the depot buildings has made a start on the foundations and good progress is being made. Tenders for residences in brick, concrete or wood, have been received, and it is for the Board to direct in what manner same will be dealt with. Point of Supply.—After considerable correspondence with the Public Works Department regard-' ing this matter the Department has agreed to give supply at the Board’s sub-station at. Shannon. Contracts. —During the month a shipment of poles arrived per Kaituna, the. quantities received amounting to 287 from Messrs S. Brown and Co., and 60 from A. C. Brown The poles are now at. Shannon station. The construction of polecarting equipment ■> is progressing satisfactorily. Tenders. —The following tenders are being invited: (1) Bare copper wire; (2) triple braided wire; (3) 600 megohm grade insulated wire; (4) transformers; (5) constant current transformers and street lighting equipment. The estimated expenditure involved in these items is approximately as follows: (1) £12,997; (2) £6,733; (3) £SOO, (4) £6,000; (5) £l,soo—total, £27,730. General. —The above tenders close in the case of No. 1 on March 15, and 1 the remainder on- April 16, hut it seemes from recent announcements that power will not be available by the end of this year, and should this be official, I think it would be advisable to delay the deliveries of material about three months, and thus eliminate interest. charges as,much as possible.
In the near future it will be necessary lo secure the services of an electrical engineering draughtsman, and I would like authority to secure a man.
Sub-station Site, Shannon.—As instructed at last Board meeting, I inspected 1 the site under offer to the Board in company with Mr Gunliihg. Provided the figure asked is in accordance with values in Shannon, I would recommend the purchase of same. Mr Gunning is of opinion that the offer is a fair one. The chairman said Mr Overton’s suggestion regarding the delay of the deliveries of material about 3 months would mean a saving of £4OO in interest which was a consideration.
Mr Kilsby asked would it be advisable to delay deliveries. The chairman said the engineer was thoroughly in touch with every phase of the work and his recommendation was not made without due consideration.
Mi’ Seifert said if the delay would throw the work out of its stride, it would mean losing more than £4OO.
The engineer explained that the delay- would not throw the work out of stride, but was made only from the fact that the work at Mangahao was not up to schedule. The engineer’s .report was adopted including the purchase of halfan- acre of land at Shannon for the sum of £l5O.
