BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. A refund ofj sanitation fee covering a period of ten months was granted to a resident who had his dwelling destroyed by fire. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The Borough road foreman reported as follows: — “During the month the road staff has been engaged on the following works: —Grading and asphal, ing the footpath in Avenue Road, weeding ' the water tables in Whyte St., grubbing lupins Victoria Park and goatsrue in Whyte St., screening sand in Council yard, patching ruts Sandon Road, Johnston St., Purcell St.; grading footpath Robinson St, mowing Triangle in Main St., and general maintenance work. We are now engaged in asphalting Robinson St. footpath and vprovided weather is favourable and tar comes to hand this work will soon be completed. An inspection has been made of Howan St. as instructed by the Council and it was round that the road needs grading and the staff intends to make some improvement at the first opportunity. The trouble is that the road was metalled from the local pit originally and there is nothing to bind it. A quantity of gorse is growing at the lower end on the south side of the road which is about six or seven feet high and extends to the wheel rut for a distance of four or live chains.”

Cr. Thompson asked if there wasn’t a motion on the books staling that the road in question lie given four or five yards of fine metal to bind it. Re gorse, he pointed out that the one responsible for it was an absentee.

The Mayor said there was a resolution dealing with the road on the books but it also provided that the landowners of that street should keep the gorse down if the road was done up.

Cr. Thompson: It is hardly fair to hold the road up on account of one man. The Mayor pointed out that the road foreman included the work of renovating the road in his report. The report was then adopted. GAS WORKS. The gas manager reported as follows : “As instructed, I had the gas engine repaired and t\ie bearing of exhauster returned and now all the apparatus is*in good working order. The floor of the coal shcd~was badly broken so I renewed the planking where necessary. During the month some of the stays of the weighbridge rusted through causing two of the easting's to break. I have had the eastings welded and new stays [mt in where required. The general work outside has been done as required.”- —Adopted.
