A French engineer, M. Edouard Berlin, lias invented an apparatus which ensures the absolute secrecy of wireless and ordinary telegraphic messages. China’s tirst extensive railroad strike which stopped traffic on the Peking-Hangkow line was won by the strikers, who got an increase of 5d per week. The owner of a farm at Neyers (France), Mme. Thivier, 94 years old, who died recently, left 98 surviving children, grandchildren, and great grand-children. Strikes amongst German labourers during last year h'ave been numerous and affected trades engaged in engineering, shipbuilding and building construction. The territory of Neuquen, where the Argentine Government has been carrying on active exploitation of petroleum is becoming a prominent centre of oil activities. In Great Britain on September 1, the average level of retail prices was 79 per cent, above that of July 1912. The cost of building is 60-70 per cent, above pre-war basis. Yugoslavia ranks next after France and United States as a producer of bauxite. Exports were 30000 tons for the period commencing > January 1, 1919, and ending September 30, 1922.
