THE HEMP MARKET.
JANUARY GRADING RETURNS.
The grading returns for the month of January for hemp, tow, and stripper slijis, has been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows:
Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 5,103 as compared with 5,473 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 370 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st January, 1923, the number of bales graded was G 0,117, as compared with 59,6G6 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 451 bales.
Tow. —During the month 1,441 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,209 for the same month last year, an increase of 232 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st January, 1923, the number of bales graded was 15,457 as compared with 12,895 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 2,562 bales.
Stripper Slips.—During the month there were 14 bales of stripper slips graded as compared with nil for the corresponding month last year. For the twelve months ending 31st January, 1923, the number of bales graded was 86 as compared with 1,283 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,196 bales. Dunedin 54 Port Chalmers Romahapa 14 16 Eighty-two bales at Pieton were graded line. One bale at Auckland, 12 at Foxton and 44 at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number of hales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 82 (48), good fair 1,076 (1,354), high fair 2,635 (3,269), low fair 883 (498), common 170 (237), rejected 57 (07), a total of 5,103 bales, being a decrease of 370 bales.
The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 1,152, Foxton 1,305, Wellington 1,550, Blenheim 179, Pieton 101, Wairoa 324, Bluff 295, Dunedin 54, Pori Chalmers 53, Romahapa 30. The following shows the detailed

Stripper Slips. —Fourteen bales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade.
