VISIT OF CAPTAIN HULL.
A visitor to Foxton yesterday was Captain Hull, of the G. P. Hull Shipping Co., owners of the coastal steamers “John” and “Holmdale,” which trade between Wanganui and southern ports. The object of the visit was to make enquiries in respect to the local port. In conversation with, the secretary of the Harbour Board, Captain Hull said in order to induce shipping to the port the bar must give a depth of nine feet. He said there were several-obstacles in the way ‘of using the local port. In the first place insurance companies would not insure steamers or cargoes entering Foxton and that plae.ed all the risk on ship-owners. The steamers of the required tonnage to -work ports like Foxton were not considered payable. That is steamers from 150 to 250 tons. In fact altered conditions did not make steamers of less than 500 tons a desirable proposition. His company had been approached to come to Foxton, but the matter wuld have to receive eax-eful consideration before anything definite was arrived at. He would be pleased to receive a copy of the plan showing the recent survey of the river.
