NEW TELEPHONE RATES.

The new rates and charges for toll communications, which were not included in the ordinary telephone charges submitted to the Chambers of Commerce recently came into force on Thursday, February Ist, and in some instances involve complications which might not be readily understood. Between 8 a.m. and 9 pan. the charges for the use of toll lines will be: up to three minutes, for distances up to 20 miles, 4d, for every additional five miles or fraction thereof up to 100 miles Id and for every additional ten miles or fraction thereof exceeding 10 miles, 2d. However, for every additional minute exceeding three, between G a.m. and every additional minute exceeding six between midnight and 6 a.m. the charge will be one-third of the initial rate. Major fractions of a penny shall be counted when calculating the charge for the communication, but fractions smaller than a halfpenny shall be disregarded in the total.

For instance, a person speaking for G minutes to another 35 miles distant will, under the new arrangement, pay 1/2 namely: For three minutes up to 20 miles, 4d; for the extra 15 miles at the rate of Id for every additional five miles, 3d; and for each additional minute exceeding three, at one-third of the initial rate (2 1-3'd per minute) 7d; making a total of 1/2. If a person were to speak for 8 minutes a distance of 40 miles during the day, he would have to pay only 1/9 although the calculation would bring it out at 1/9 l-3d. The new charges will he based on the actual distance; between the parties only. As an example: Napier is 150 miles and the charge is 2/3, whereas it is actually only 120 miles, the new cost thus being only 2/-. New Plymouth is actually IGO miles, but is now counted at 200 miles and the charge is 3/-. Under. the new scale the charge will be only 2/8. On the other hand., Wellington is only 93 miles but is charged at 100 miles, 1/G, and under the new rate will be charged 1/7 for three minutes.
