BEWARE PAROCHIALISM.

HARBOUR BOARD’S PLACE OF MEETING. A FAIR COMPROMISE. The port of Foxton concerns a very wide district and everything possible should be done by the Board to maintain a wide interest in the port. The districts interested have representation on the Board and their attendance at the Board meetings is of the utmost importance. When the Board was re-con-stituted all meetings were held at Foxton but the attendance of members was so erratic that time after time meetings lapsed for want of a quorum. In order to overcome this it was decided to alternate the venue of meetings at Foxton and Palmerston and as a result the attendance improved and greater interest was evinced. At Tuesday’s meeting" of the Board, Mr -J. Chrystall moved that in future all meetings be held at the board’s office at Foxton in conformity with the requirements of the Act.

Mr E. R. Holben reminded the mover that representation at the Palmerston North end was just as great as in the Foxton quarter and to hold all meetings at Foxton would cause some difficulty in the matter of the attendance of members from the Palmerston North division. He suggested that meetings be held allornately at Palmerston North and Foxton.

The chairman (Mr J. Linklater, ALP.,) to Mr Chrystall: Have you been looking up the Act?

Mr Chrystall: Yes. Mr Linklater: We should have two offices. (Laughter.) Mr Chrystall: We should get the members here once a month to let them see the progress of the board’s work. They see nothing at all in Palmerston North. Mr Holben remarked that only' on very few occasions had he, for one, seen much of the -harbour works on meeting days at Foxton. The chairman commented that that might be overcome by meeting in the morning so .that members could view the port in the afternoon. Personally he did not care where the meetings were held so long as they were successful. Mr Chrystall opined that it would lie more conducive to good business being done to hold the meetings in Foxton.

It was finally decided to hold meetings alternately at Palmerston North and Foxton.
