BOWLING, TENNIS AND CROQUET.
PROPOSED COMBINED PLAYING AREA. The proposal to acquire a section of land next the bowling green for the purpose of laying down tennis and croquet lawns and to coin--bine the activities of the three games in the one area was discussed by representatives of the Bowling Club and Tennis Club last night. The Bowling club was represented by Messrs Christie, Pearson and Bryant and the secretary (Mr Roore) and the Tennis club by Messrs Dr. Wyllie, McMurray, Jackson, and Fergic.
The proposal was formally discussed at length. For the tennis club it was pointed out that their area was restricted and prejudiced a larger membership. If the section under discussion was purchased and could be obtained at a reasonable figure it would allow of ample room for tour courts and a croquet green. The liability on the present tennis property was about £IOO secured by bank overdraft and guarantee and the guarantors would have to be released as a first call on the disposal of the property.
The Bowling Club held their property under lease from the Council and space was too limited for croquet and membership was restricted by x'eason of the limited greens. The property adjoining under offer consisted of over an aeer together with cottage theron. This would furnish ample space for tennis and croquet although another adjoining property is also under offer. The question of ways and means was discussed and a special moneyraising effort suggested. The delegates are to report back to the clubs interested and a further conference will be held at a later date.
