RUN OVER BY MOTOR CAR.

LOCAL RESIDENT’S LEG FRAC-

TURED.

The intersection of Duncan St. and the Lady’s Mile was the scene of a painful accident at about 11 o’clock on Saturday night. Mr V. Betty, accompanied by a young - lady and her parents, were in the “ vicinity when two ears were approaching from the seaside. The first car turned into Duncan Street and the rear car, driven by Mr Conlan, of Himatangi, took a turn out from Duncan Street to avoid any traffic from that direction. In making the sweep the car struck Mr Betty, who moved in the same direction as the car and the wheel passed over his right leg causing a compound fracture below the knee. Several residents in the locality heard a cry and were quickly on the scene and Dr. Wyllie was summoned and attended the sufferer. Mr Betty was at once removed to the Palmerston hospital where an op- ■ eration was found necessary on Sunday morning to knit the fractured bones. Upon inquiry yesterday “Vic.” was progressing favonrubiv and was quite cheerful when conversing with our representative. If will be quite six weeks before Mr Betty is able to get about again.
