SHIPPING DISPUTE.
SEAMEN READY TO RESUME. Wellington, Last Night. Though the secretary of the Seamen’s Union has announced that the members have terminated the present position, and will present themselves for employment this morning, the Shipowners’ Federation has not received the assurances required from the union, and the acting-secretary of the owners’ organisation declares that until such assurances have been received union labour will not be engaged. OPINION AT LYTTELTON. Christchurch, .January 22. The strikers at Lyttelton appear in (he majority of cases to be very pleased that a. settlement has been reached, especially the married men. Some complain that the strike was badly engineered and should not have lasted so long. The prospects at Lyttelton for employment of the men do not appear to he too bright at present. VICTIMS OF BLUNDERS. PROSPECTS OF EMPLOYMENT NOT BRIGHT. Christchurch, January 22. Although no information was given out after the meeting of seamen at Lyttelton this morning, there is no doubt that the strike is ended as far as Lyttelton is concerned and that union labour will be offering to-morrow. The men will go hack on the employers’ terms. The strikers generally are pleased with the settlement, and it is felt they have been the victims of blunders by the union officials in Wellington. THE AUCKLAND SEAMEN. Auckland, January 22. The seamen’s strike has been declared off, so far as the men are concerned, but it is understood that the shipowners will not engage members of the union until the required assurance is given by the union officials. There are no vacancies on any vessels —in fact there are numbers of volunteers on the waiting list.
