GAS AND ELECTRICITY.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Could you inform me what effect the introduction of electric light, will have upon the municipal gas works? I understand that the works have not been self-support-ing since the Council took them over at a. fancy price from a private company. For many reasons electricity is preferable to gas both for power and lighting but if ratepayers are to be saddled with an extra gas rate by changing over, electric light in Foxton -is going to be pretty costly. If lam correct, and I hope you will publish all the necessary details in connection with the supply of electricity, would it not be possible for the Council to offer the gas works for sale, even at a loss of say, a couple of thousand? I am not making any complaint about the quality of gas manufactured, or the management, which I consider admirable, but in dealing with the coming of electricity a penny wise and pound foolish policy should not be followed. Thanking you, sir, for space with the hope of hearing a little more on the subject. I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
