OBITUARY.

Walter McDonald, aged 3S YEARS. The death took place at the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday morning' of Walter McDonald, local stationmaster, aged 38 years. The late Mr McDonald joined the Railway Department as a youth and continued in the service up to the time of his death. As a public official he was held in the highest esteem by the department and public and by whom his loss is deeply regretted. He was conscientious in the discharge of his duties and courteous to all with whom he came in contact.

During the war he volunteered for service and although he went (o England with the troops his services were requisitioned for other duties which precluded him from participating in the firing line. Upon his return he was for a time relieving stationmaster in the Wellington district and about four .fears ago he was appointed local .stationmaster. About two years ago he married Miss T. Mooney, of Wellington.

About three, months ago he contracted a severe chill while working in his garden, and pneumonia set in followed bv other complications. He rallied for a time and about a fortnight ago was removed to the Palmerston Hospital for special treatment, but his case was considered hopeless and he passed peacefully away as above stated. The late Mr McDonald was born in the Otago district where his parents resided and where his mother recently passed away.

'l'lie sympathy of the public of Foxton will go out in large measure to his devoted wife and child who are left to mourn their loss.

The funeral took place at Palmerston North this afternoon and was attended by a number of local residents, who, at short notice, desired to pay a last tribute of respect to the deceased.

The local railway staff, shipping and carrying firms and Mi's Walls combined and forwarded a beautiful wreath as a mark of respect.

M. J. W. local relieving stationmaster, attended the funeral on behalf of the local railway staff.
