Te Awamutn, January 12. A motor car engaged in the Te Awanmt n-lvaAvhia mail service crashed info a train at the. level crossing near Te Awamutn railway station lasf night. The car was wrecked, ifs three occupants having a miraculous escape. The effect of the impact Avas to throw the car well into the air, finally leaA'ing the remnants in the re\'erse .direction on the road. The driver, C. C. Berry, was thrown headlong through the Avindscreen, striking the truck and lying Avithin six inches of the rails. Two passengers on the. back seat Avere thrown clear to the road, one escaping Avith minor injuries about the bead and the ofher with minor scratches. Drive)' Berry was badly cut about and his nose was broken. The crossing is a dangerous one, the train approach being hidden by buildings. It is surmised that the brakes in this instanc erefused to act. There haA 7 e been mam' narrow escapes, and similar accidents have occurred. The department proposes shortly to erect an overhead bridge ns part of a scheme in rearranging the station yard.
