THE LOCAL PORT.
Mr Fuller, shipping manager for Messrs Levin and Co., conferred .with the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mi’ J. Linklater, M.P.,) yesteday in connection with certain proposals affecting shipping at the local port. Among other matters discussed was the proposed cut by the Manawatu-Oroua River Board. The lay opinion has been expressed that the cut if sanctioned, will so lower the depth of water in the channel from the heads to the wharf as to render the town wharf useless for shipping. As Messrs Levin and Co. and other firms are contemplating building stores at the present wharf, they Avant a definite assurance that any alteration to the river’s course will not prejudice shipping to the wharf. It has been suggested that the Avhole matter he submitted by the Board to an experienced engineer for a report before building operations are commenced and other arrangements made for increased shipping to the port. The matter will he discussed at the next Board meeting.
