MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Sir James Wilson presided over the monthly meeting of tie Manawatu County Council yesterday, there being also present: Crs. Jas. McKelvie, Strode-Penny, W. E. Barker, Jas. Boyce, H. H. Hunt, and H. Fagan. Correspondence was . read, from the Department of Agriculture asking to be informed of districts where the eradication of goat’s rue is not being attended to. The Horowhenua County ( mined and Levin Borough Council declined to assist in the deviation of the road from the Wirokino Bridge, near
Foxton. . F. W. Fosterin, tram employee, reported that as the result of an accident in July he had lost the sight of his right eye and g ave notice that he was claiming compensation. Cr Barber brought up the question of stock being constantly on the roads and the same names were on the rangers report monthly. Evi dent-ly the poundage fees, were not a sufficient deterrent. It was decided to draw the attention of the ranger to this with instructions'to prosecute.
A deputation from Tangimoana settlers waited on the council recording the upkeep of conveniences ~t the settlement. On Boxing Day, alone, 2,000 people visited the beach. There were no sanitary conveniences, dressing sheds, or conveniences for holding water. Some of the settlers had already subscribed a considerable amount for the purpose and the deputation submitted a small schedule for these conveniences at an estimated cost of £SO for material. A discussion then ensued as to what power the council had to subsidise such schemes.
The chairman considered the council had a duty to perform regarding sanitary matters. It was moved that the sum of £lO he voted for the purpose but the motion was lost, the chairman, Crs. McKelvie, Boyce and Barber voting against the motion. Cr. Fagan then moved that an engineer he authorised to prepare plans of conveniences, and that they he submitted to the next meeting of the council. After conferring with the spokesman for the deputation, this was agreed to.
County fund account dr. £5762 11/10; loan account, cr. £9,781 12/6, net cr. balance, £4,619 0/8.
Riding Accounts. —Cr . Sandon, £4l 19/5; Waitoki, £303 12/-; Rongotea, £142 10/4; Awaliou £7 7/6. Expenditure, Mt. Stewart, £.( 7/6; Carnarvon, £63 17/-; Kawakawa, £334 3/9. Accounts amounting to £1,604 16/9, general account, £498 4/8, loan account, were passed for
payment. Awaliou Riding.—The Road has been cut into holes ana nits during the last month by heavy motor traffic and at one time the road was almost impassable. We have carted metal and patched up the worst places and also trimmed up the road with grader, and yet the road is breaking through, and will require a large quantity of metal to put it in order for next season. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT.
The chief items of traffic were: — General merchandise 106 tons, minerals and manure 199:f tons, stock 74 trucks, butter and chegse 1604 tons, timber 20,900 sup. feet. Fares amounted to 13/8. The accounts show a debit balance of £9O 8/1 for the month’s working. On the lltli ultimo, whilst sanding the rail in front of the train, going up the Ilongotea bank, Alfed Seandlyn was run over by the engine and killed. The locomotive “Manawatu” is at preent at Foxton for the purpose of repairs to firebox. All the tubes have been drawn and defective ones will be renewed when the boiler is retubed.
