TWO COUNCILLORS RETIRE.
At last •night’s Council meeting Cr. Martin wrote asking for three months’ leave of absence, as he was following an • occupation which would preclude him from attending Council meetings and leave of absence would obviate the necessity of the expense of a by-election.— Leave of absence was granted. • Cr. Whibley tendered his resignation. He said that he had perused the Act in conjunction with the Town Clerk and his resignation taking effect within /dx months of the election would obviate the necessity for a by-election. The Mayor suggested that three months’ leave of absence be asked for in lieu of the resignation. The Mayor said had Cr. Whibley’s resignation come six months ago instead of now he would not have expressed regret but Cr Whibley had worked harmoniously with the Council and he regretted his resignation as he had shown marked ability in the discharge of his duties. He wished him success in his future undertakngs. Crs. Walker, .Smith, Bryant and Thompson endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. Cr. Whibley acknowledged the good wishes and said that although they did not agree in all things, ,he was satisfied that every Councillor was out to do his best, for the welfare of tiie town. * He liked local body work and hoped to take it up again in another town. When he resigned from, the Horowhenua Board lie hoped the Council would appoint the Mayor in his place.
Cr. Whibley’s resignation was received with regret.
