A MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
WIFE TERRIBLY INJURED WITH HAMMER. HUSBAND SHOOTS HIMSELF. Waipawa, January 3. The holidays were, marked by a shocking tragedy at the Waipawa pa. After quarrelling with his wife, Puhi Maihi, a middle-aged Maori, attacked her with a hammer and fractured her skull. He then blew his head off with a shotgun. Maihi was a man over 59 and possessed means. His wife, Linda, was only about 22. Linda Maihi is still lingering today, but little hope is entertained of her recovery. Puhi Maihi had threatened the previous night to commit suicide, hut was prevented by friends who removed weapons from his' reach. He succeeded in recovering a gun, however, and learning that his wife was leaving him to go with a younger Maori, Puhi murderously assaulted her. The woman’s screams attracted the Natives to the pa but Puhi threatened to shoot anyone who came near him. After his first attempt at suicide, which shot half his- face away, he walked twenty yard's, and then fired another shot, which practically blew his head oft.
