A CLOSE CALL.
AND A PLUCKY RESCUE. An accident which might have resulted in very serious consequences was narrowly averted at Titalii Bay (Wellington) on Thursday afternoon. A young girl 13 years of age, to all appearances a good swimmer, got into difficulties while bathing in the surf. Mr H. Whyte and Mr A. McKillip went to her assistance in a small rowing boat, and made a very plucky attempt to reach her; hut while they were trying to rescue her the boat capsized and the two men, both of whom were fully clad, were thrown into the water.
In the meantime a treacherous current was carrying the three people further away from the shore. A large rowing boat containing three residents of Titahi Bay who knew how the current was to be tackled, proceeded in another direction than taken by the other would-be rescuers,' and, coming round near the unfortunate three, effected a very timely rescue. All the patients received medical attention.
